Brett

Brett was born into the racing industry, riding trackwork at the age of 12 before school for his grandfather Frank Cavanough, also a mentor for one of Victoria’s best trainers, Peter Moody.
At 15, Brett left school to work for Queensland trainers Jim McCormack and Barry Baldwin (trainer of the 2006 Stradbroke Handicap winner La Montagna) and also learned the delicate craft of breaking in horses.
At 18, Brett was keen to try his hand at training, but the raw young man thought he should explore his options. So, he left the racing industry and toiled at a number of different things before he was enticed into shearing at 24 – and what a rare talent was discovered. In September 1997, Brett became the first Australian to hold an official World Shearing Record when he shore 427 in eight hours at Widgeiwa Station in the Riverina.
In 1998, Brett considered himself ready to return to racing.
Since, he has won eleven Southern District Racing Association trainers’ premierships as well as most of the Southern District Racing Association Country Cups.
Brett has won the title of New South Wales leading country trainer on 5 occasions (2007, 2008, 2010, 2018 & 2019).
Brett’s success is based on the simple principles of hard work and professionalism that come from growing up in outback Queensland before emerging as Australia’s leading sheep shearer.
Brett leaves nothing to chance, having a superb support staff and after serving a long apprenticeship, he is reaping the rewards of many years of hard work.
